The movie starts in the present day in london. Heroin Amy Jackson, a 85 year old lady who has a blood clot in her brain and has only a 50-50 chance of surviving the operation, has a picture of parithi (Arya) which is 60 years old and she wants to go to Madharasapattinam which is now as Cheenai. Then the story moves back to the pre-independence era in 1945. Amy the daughter of the governor comes to Madras.

Parithi is a local tamil boy who is a dobhi by profession and also a Kushthi (ancient fight) fighter. They live on the banks of Kuvam river where they also work. On her very first day in Madars she see's parithi (Arya) also in a couple of other occasions they meet and she starts liking him. In the meanwhile the governor decides to convert the dobhi’s living area into a golf course and the dobhi’s work place is destroyed. By this time amy against her wish is engaged to Robert Ellis, the police commissioner. Then slowly as the movie progresses amy and parithi fall in love but by the India is given Independence. Amy’s father wants to go back to England but amy wants to stay back with parithi. What happens next is for you to watch.

Arya has given a good performance. He has done all the action parts well. Amy Jackson also is good as amy. Cochin Hanifa as nambji makes us laugh at a lot of places. His loss is really big loss to the south Indian film industry. Nasser, m.s.basker, balasingh, alex o nell, jack james have all played important roles.

Vijay has given a quality period film as his third film. Madarasapattinam will be a landmark film in the carreers of the cast and crew of the film. The amount of research done and effort put in is clearly visible from the end product. Congrats to the director for that. But still the film has its share of flaws too. The re-recording lets down the film at places. The film reminds us of titanic at a couple of places. The positives are selva, the art director plays an important role in the success of the film and cinematography is also good except for a couple of out of focus shots.

Verdict : A great piece of art
